Smart Roaming
Fast, intelligent roaming for mobile devices in mission-critical wireless environments.
As the use of robots, AGVs, and AMRs continues to grow across industrial environments, wireless mobility becomes a core operational requirement. These devices move continuously throughout a site and depend on uninterrupted connectivity as they transition from one access point to another.
Altai Smart Roaming is designed to support seamless AP-to-AP transition with fast handover, proactive roaming assistance, and packet continuity mechanisms that help maintain stable wireless connectivity for mobile operations.
Why Smart Roaming matters
In mobile industrial environments, roaming performance has a direct impact on application continuity. If a client remains connected to an AP for too long, or transitions too slowly to the next AP, the result can be service interruption, degraded communications, or packet loss.
Smart Roaming addresses this challenge by enabling the client and APs to coordinate the roaming process before the existing connection deteriorates, helping the client maintain connection quality while moving across the network.
Use corporate materials, case studies, and sales assets to strengthen positioning and customer conversations.
Access datasheets, technical documentation, and planning tools to validate requirements and respond faster.
Build stronger RFP submissions, tenders, and customer proposals with the right technical and visual resources.
Equip your team with firmware, software, and deployment guidance for smoother implementation.
How it works
In mobile industrial environments, roaming performance has a direct impact on application continuity. If a client remains connected to an AP for too long, or transitions too slowly to the next AP, the result can be service interruption, degraded communications, or packet loss.
Smart Roaming addresses this challenge by enabling the client and APs to coordinate the roaming process before the existing connection deteriorates, helping the client maintain connection quality while moving across the network.
Key capabilities
Enhanced active background scanning and roaming threshold control enable Altai CPE to achieve handover time of 80–100 ms.
Altai APs proactively monitor client connection status and facilitate roaming using standard 802.11k/v/r or non-standard mechanisms such as client RSSI/PER, helping reduce the impact of poor handover decisions made by clients alone.
The Altai APs involved in roaming communicate with each other to enable intelligent packet buffering and forwarding, reducing packet loss to zero.
Built for mobile operational environments
Smart Roaming is designed for environments where clients are continuously moving and wireless continuity is critical to operations.
Typical applications include:
- Robots
- Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)
- Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)
In these use cases, Smart Roaming helps ensure a seamless transition from one AP to another without packet loss, supporting the reliability required for critical operations.
Performance for real-time applications
Altai Smart Roaming can achieve roaming times as low as 80 ms, which is shorter than the requirements for voice and video and also meets most real-time industrial applications.
By combining fast reassociation with coordinated AP communication, Smart Roaming helps maintain stable connectivity for mobile devices operating in demanding wireless environments.
